## What wagtail does, in the publisher's words

Wagtail's official collection of expert skills for developers working on Wagtail projects.

Our skills are authored to help across a wide range of projects and only load when Wagtail is involved, but that's not to say you have to load them all. We offer multiple options.

Our recommended approach. Install one evergreen Wagtail skill plus wagtail-cli, and it will automatically load relevant information from pre-bundled skills files and live developer docs as needed. Install the CLI first:

## Skills

- wagtail-api: Configure, extend, consume, and debug Wagtail's v3 API. Use when mounting v3 routes, exposing readable or writable fields, discovering schemas, serializing StreamField and rich text, building headless clients, or integrating authenticated CMS operations. Applies to API v3 integrations, not API v2,…
- wagtail-backend: Implement and review Wagtail backend behavior using Django and Python practices. Use for page queries, search, routing, permissions, revisions, snippets, forms, workflows, signals, data migrations, or backend performance. Focus on runtime correctness and data integrity; use content-modeling guidanc…
- wagtail-content-modeling: Design and evolve Wagtail content models and editor interfaces. Use when choosing page types, page tree rules, snippets or settings; adding model fields, inline relations, StreamField blocks or rich text; improving block groups, icons, previews and settings; or migrating existing content structures…
- wagtail-frontend: Build and improve Wagtail frontend templates, HTML, CSS, and media rendering. Use for StreamField or rich text output, accessible navigation and forms, responsive images, page metadata, multilingual links, sitemaps, frontend performance and sustainability, or SEO and generative engine optimization…
- wagtail-upgrade: Plan or execute a Wagtail release upgrade, including dependency compatibility and project changes. Use for site upgrades or extending a package's supported Wagtail versions.

Descriptions come from the frontmatter of each SKILL.md, punctuation lightly normalized.
